Buying Guide: Key Purchase Considerations for Stamp Collectors and Everyday Mailers
-
<li Purpose and usage: Decide whether you want stamps for everyday mailing, holiday correspondence, or collectibles. Forever stamps offer protection against future rate increases, while non-forever issues may be more limited in long-term value.
<li Design and theme: Seasonal motifs (Winter Scenes, Winter Berries) offer decorative appeal for holiday cards, while historical issues (Lucille Ball, Hollywood Legends) appeal to collectors who value philatelic history.
<li Format and convenience: Booklets, rolls, and sheets each suit different use-cases—rolls for bulk, booklets for regular mail, sheets for display or resale.
<li Condition and storage: Preserve stamps by keeping them in a dry, temperature-stable environment. Consider protective albums or sleeves for collectible sheets and varieties.
<li Authenticity and sourcing: Purchase from reputable retailers or official postal channels to ensure genuine stamps and accurate postages.
<li Collectibility vs. utility: Some designs may hold long-term value as collectibles, while others focus on practical postage needs for daily mailings.
<li International vs. domestic use: International stamps (like Global Poinsettia) provide options for cross-border mail, but ensure compatibility with your destination’s postage requirements.
<li Completion strategies: If you’re building a themed collection (holiday stamps, legendary figures, or winter scenes), decide whether you’ll acquire full sets or selective issues and plan around current availability.
