- Climate compatibility: Gaillardia aristata thrives in USDA Zones 3–10. Check your hardiness zone and ensure your site has full sun and well-drained soil to maximize bloom longevity.
- Seed vs. plant: Seed options are cost-effective and ideal for large areas or long-term propagation, while packaged plants offer immediate impact and faster establishment in borders.
- Bloom time and color: Look for varieties with extended bloom periods, such as early summer through fall, and color ranges from burgundy to bi-colored red, orange, and yellow.
- Watering needs: Once established, Gaillardia often tolerates drought due to deep roots. Plan for minimal irrigation in dry seasons to sustain performance.
- Pollinator value: These flowers attract butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds, contributing to a thriving pollinator garden.
- Maintenance: Deadheading spent blooms can extend flowering, while biennial or perennial behavior varies by cultivar and climate.
- Seed saving and viability: Some packets provide guidance on seed storage and saving for future seasons, enhancing long-term garden planning.
- Package size and count: Choose seed counts that fit your garden scale—large counts for expansive borders, smaller counts for containers or test plots.
